PARALYSIS

PARALYSIS is the loss of the ability to move any part  (arm or leg ) or whole of body. sometimes there is inablity to feel anything. in part or most of the body, typically as a result of illness, poison, or injury.

"paralysis of chest muscles can cause breathing difficulties, and sometimes death"

Ayurveda denotes paralysis as a Vata prakriti(Imbalance of VATA dosha)

TYPES OF PARALYSIS

1. FACIAL PARALYSIS

Loss of facial muscle movement because of damage to facial nerve and usually happens on one side of face.

  2.HEMIPLAGIA

Paralysis of arm, leg and trunk of same side of body.

3.GENERALIZED PARALYSIS

It is a Neuropsychiatric disorder in which full body paralysis occurs that affects the BRAIN and CNS

CAUSES

Damage in Nervous System especially spinal cord. Other causes are -

·       Stroke

·       Sudden severe mental tension

·       Trauma with nerve injury.

·       Poliomyelitis

·       Cerebral Palsy

·       Peripheral neuropathy

·       Parkinson's disease

·       Multiple sclerosis

·       Gullian -Barre- Syndrome

·       Infection or inflammation of facial nerve

SYMPTOMS

·       Facial pain

·       Headache or dizziness

·       Ear ache

·       Dryness of eyes and mouth

·       Loss of voluntary movement of face

·       Difficulty in voluntary functions of hand and leg

·       Muscular stiffness in affected area

·       Speech difficulty

·       Dysphasia

·       Anxiety, Anger, Irritability & Depression

·       Patient usually presented with psychotic symptoms of sudden onset and patient would become completely incapacitated and bed fast

INVESTIGATIONS

·       Blood tests for liver function and cardiac function

·       Urine tests for bio chemistry and infections Urine c/s

·        CT, MRI

TREATMENT

Herbal treatment for paralysis depends upon site , severity and extant of paralysis as well as cause of it. Includes following herbs –

·       Licorice ( Glyrrhiza glabbra)

·       Ashwagandha (withania somniphera)

·       Siberian ginseng

·       Amalaki ( Emblica officinalis)

·       Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)
